The History of
First Baptist Church Helena

We will celebrate our
185th anniversary this year!
First Baptist Church of Helena was formed in 1833 with 12 original members. The church was originally called Union Baptist Church and was one of three charter members of the now dissolved Canaan Baptist Association.

In 1852, Union Baptist Church became a charter member of the Shelby Baptist Association. The church originally met south of the current location before meeting in the late 1800’s in the old Helena Masonic Hall which is now the Helena Museum.

1883, the church was renamed Helena Baptist Church.

1910, land was purchased and a building was erected on the current property. However, on May 3, 1933 at 3:40 A.M., a major tornado struck Helena and completely destroyed the church building along with the Methodist and Presbyterian churches.  In the aftermath of the tornado, the church met at Helena Elementary School until the new church building was erected in 1936. The church building was dedicated on November 21, 1936 and still stands today with the main floor used as the children’s worship area and the bottom floor used as educational space.
March 27, 1977, the current Sanctuary was dedicated and continues to be used today.

Through the years additional space has been added for educational areas including a major addition to the original structure in the early

2006, the Christian Life Center was opened and contains a full gymnasium, commercial kitchen, professional sound system, walking track, weight room, classrooms, and Pastoral offices.

Our Church Today

Mission of First Baptist Church Helena

we are committed to four basic principles:

Family, which means that we emphasize and equip the family unit.  We also understand that we as individuals belong to a larger church family.

Community, which means that as we live and worship God individually that we will pursue relationships through our church family and friends. We need time and interaction together which creates community as well as offers us opportunities to be strengthened and encouraged by brothers and sisters in Christ.  We also know that God has placed us in the community of Helena to serve and minister to all who cross our path.

Knowing God, which means that everything that we do as a church should involve growing closer to God.  Our aim is to know God because every true encounter with God radically changes each of us.

Making God Known, which means that as we are growing closer to God, we are also being equipped to make God known.  We desire that every single person who calls Helena home will be transformed by the saving power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We desire that through our efforts to make God known here at home that He will send us and allow us to send whatever is needed to make disciples of all nations.

We are excited about what God is doing through His people here at First Baptist Helena
and look with great anticipation to what is to come.

We invite you, to join our family of believers
in worship this Sunday!
